ER HTV Database of Forest Reserve Programme

Intézet: Institute of Ecology and Botany and National Botanical Garden
Year of commissioning of the infrastructure: 2013

Summary

The ER HTV database of the Hungarian Forest Reserve Programme manages and helps to process data-flow services of the standard inventory data acquired from the permanent sampling plots (PSPs) of the Stand Dynamic and Forest Ecology Monitoring Network. The main aim is to learn about the natural lifecycle, varied structure, long-term processes, and rich wildlife of natural forests, which support the fulfill of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the Nature Restoration Law of the EU. It helps to find nature-based solutions in the development of forest management practices with reference data and knowledge on structures and processes of natural forest stands. The population dynamic processes of trees, and impacts, drivers, and trends can be revealed by comparative evaluation of regular re-inventories. Thirty-two core areas out of 63 forest reserves of Hungary have been inventoried by surveying the stand structure, shrub and regeneration layer, and herb layer. The database stores and manages about 243 thousand records of 4566 PSPs. We cooperate with several research teams from the University of Sopron and researchers from other universities.

The ‘backend’ infrastructure is ensured by an SQL relational database management system operated on one of the servers of the HUN-REN Centre for Ecological Research. The ‘frontend’ web application provides multi-user, parallel access to the data-flow services that are applied by our partners too.
